HVC reports less residual waste per resident

HVC says average household residual waste in its collection area fell from 225 kg per resident in 2017 to 159 kg in 2025.

A new annual update from HVC shows a clear long-term drop in residual waste.

In its 2025 annual report update, published on April 13, 2026, HVC says average household residual waste in its collection area fell from 225 kg per resident in 2017 to 159 kg per resident in 2025.

That matters because residual waste is the stream that is hardest to recover once it is mixed. Less residual waste usually means more material is being separated earlier, such as GFT, paper, PMD, glass, textiles, or bulky reusable items.

HVC also says one municipality that started with a recycle tariff in 2025 saw residual waste fall by more than 40%. The provider links that drop to a financial incentive that encourages residents to separate waste more carefully.

For BinSync readers, the practical takeaway is simple: small sorting decisions at home add up. A waste calendar helps you remember the right pickup day, but the bigger impact comes from using each collection moment well.

Before your next collection, it is worth checking:

  • Whether GFT, paper, PMD, glass, or textiles can be separated first
  • Whether bulky items can go to a recycling point instead of residual waste
  • Whether your local rules have changed since your last afvalkalender check

When residual waste goes down, fewer usable materials are burned and more can stay in circulation.
