Make cardboard small before it reaches the paper container

Circulus and Afvalstoffendienst are both reminding residents that clean, dry, flattened cardboard keeps paper containers usable and streets tidier.

Two recent provider updates point to the same practical problem: cardboard only works well as recycling when it is clean, dry, and small enough to fit inside the paper container.

On June 2, 2026, Circulus published tips for separating old paper and cardboard. The provider says boxes should be flattened or cut into smaller pieces, paper and cardboard should be placed loose in the container, and wet or dirty material should stay out.

Afvalstoffendienst.nl is testing a more visible solution in the city centre of 's-Hertogenbosch. In an update published on May 27, 2026, it says three underground paper containers are being fitted with a cardboard helper that makes it easier to score and tear boxes before putting them in the container.

The reason is simple. Large boxes can block underground containers or make them look full before they really are. When cardboard is left beside the container, it can create litter, get wet, and become harder to recycle.

For BinSync readers, this is a useful habit to pair with your next paper or cardboard collection day:

  • Flatten boxes before you leave home
  • Cut or tear large pieces into smaller parts
  • Keep paper and cardboard clean and dry
  • Put material loose in the container, not tied up in plastic
  • Avoid forcing cardboard into an opening if it clearly does not fit

An afvalkalender helps you remember when paper and cardboard are collected. A few minutes of preparation helps make sure that material can actually be collected and recycled once the day arrives.
