You switched to a new phone, copied your apps and photos, and everything seemed to work. Then collection day arrived without the usual waste notification.
This is easy to miss. A phone transfer can restore an app without restoring its selected address, reminder preferences, or permission to send notifications. The waste calendar may still be correct while the alert that should bring it to your attention is no longer active.
Why waste app notifications can stop after a phone switch
Push notifications use a registration token that identifies a particular app installation on a particular device. The provider's server normally stores that token so it knows where to send each alert. After an app is restored from a backup or installed on a new phone, it must obtain a current token and send that registration back to the provider.
If that handoff fails, the provider may retain a stale registration for the old phone—effectively sending reminders to a device that is no longer in use. Apple explains that it issues a new token after a device is restored from a backup or an app moves to a new device, and Firebase documents that backup restores can cause push-registration conflicts.
This is one possible cause, not a diagnosis of every waste app. A missing address, disabled reminder, or revoked phone permission can produce the same visible result.
First, check the next collection day
Do not wait for another missed notification to test whether the problem is fixed. Open your municipal waste app or its website and confirm the next collection for your postcode and house number. If a collection is due soon, set a manual alarm or calendar reminder immediately. That gives you time to repair the normal notification setup without missing another bin.
Restore waste notifications on the new phone
Work through these checks in order:
- Open the app and check your address. Make sure the correct postcode, house number, and any house-number addition are still saved. If the app asks you to complete its introduction again, the old settings probably did not transfer.
- Turn reminders on inside the app. Waste apps can have separate switches for collection reminders or individual waste types. Select the streams you want, such as GFT, PMD, paper, or residual waste, and choose the reminder time again.
- Allow notifications in the phone settings. On iPhone, check Settings > Apps > [waste app] > Notifications. On Android, check Settings > Notifications > App notifications. Allow alerts, sounds, and lock-screen notifications according to your preference.
- Check Focus, Do Not Disturb, and battery settings. A Focus mode can silence an otherwise valid alert. Some Android phones can also restrict an app in the background to save power.
- Remove and add the address again if necessary. If the app shows the right address but the reminder settings do not respond, setting up the address again can recreate the notification configuration. Reinstalling the app is a reasonable final step after noting your current settings.
- Compare the date with the official waste calendar. If the app and website both show no collection, the issue may be a changed collection day rather than a broken notification. Check service updates from your municipality or waste collector as well.
The exact menu names differ between phones and waste apps, but the principle is the same: the app needs the correct address, reminders must be enabled inside the app, and the operating system must allow those reminders to appear.
This problem is why I built BinSync
The same thing happened to me with the MijnAfvalwijzer app. After I switched phones, the waste notifications stopped. The app was present on my new device, but the reminder setup I depended on had not followed me in a reliable way. I only discovered that when the expected alert did not arrive.
It felt like a fragile arrangement for something as routine as putting out the right bin. I did not want collection reminders to depend on one app being installed correctly on one particular phone. That frustration became the reason I built BinSync.
BinSync does not rely on push notifications
Fortunately, BinSync takes a different approach. It does not depend on push notifications from a municipal waste app. Instead, it uses the tools people already check across their devices:
- Calendar subscription: BinSync adds collection days to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook, and other apps that support calendar subscriptions. When your calendar account is synced to a new phone, the waste calendar can come with it. You can use the notification settings of your own calendar app.
- Email reminders: BinSync can send collection reminders by email. They arrive in your inbox and do not depend on a municipal app being installed or allowed to send push notifications on a specific phone. Email is a battle-tested, account-based notification channel: it keeps working across devices as long as you can access the same inbox. As an added benefit, the whole family or household can receive the reminders. Each person gets the email in their own inbox, with no need for every household member to install and configure a waste app.
Using the calendar and email together gives you two independent ways to see what is being collected. When you change phones, sign in to the same calendar and email accounts, make sure the BinSync calendar is visible, and check that its calendar alerts are enabled. There is no municipal push-notification setup to rebuild.
A new phone should not be the reason the wrong bin stays in the shed. Whatever reminder method you use, check it as part of your phone-migration routine—alongside your alarm clock, banking app, and authenticator.
Frequently asked questions about waste notifications on a new phone
Why am I no longer receiving notifications from my waste app after switching phones?
The app may have lost its saved address or reminder preferences, the new phone may not allow notifications, or the push registration may still be associated with a stale device token. Open the app once, check the address and reminder settings, and then check the app's notification permission in your phone settings.
What should I check when MijnAfvalwijzer notifications are not working?
Confirm your postcode and house number, enable reminders for the required waste streams, and allow MijnAfvalwijzer to send notifications in iOS or Android. Compare the next date with the official waste calendar so you can distinguish a notification problem from a changed collection day.
Does every household member need to install a waste app?
Not with BinSync email reminders. Family members and housemates can receive reminders in their own inboxes without each person installing and configuring the provider's app.
